About St. Albans

Saint Albans, commonly abbreviated as St. Albans, is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, in the United States. The population was 5,999 at the 2010 census, up from 5,086 at the 2000 census. The town completely surrounds the city of St. Albans.

History
The town was named for St Albans in England, which itself is named after the Early Christian British saint and protomartyr.

On October 19, 1864, St. Albans was the site of the St. Albans Raid, the northernmost Confederate land action of the American Civil War, which was an enemy cavalry raid and bank robbery across the border from Quebec, Canada. The town of St. Albans and the city of St. Albans were separated in 1902. References to “St. Albans” prior to this date generally refer to the town center, which now belongs to the city. The town was incorporated in 1859, and the city in 1902.

Henri Le Caron, who, while acting as a secret agent of the British government, held the position of “Inspector-General of the Irish Republican Army”, asserted that he distributed fifteen thousand stands of arms and almost three million rounds of ammunition in the care of the many trusted men stationed between New York and St. Albans, in preparation for the unsuccessful Fenian raid on Canada which took place in April 1870. United States General George Meade, forewarned, captured much of these munitions as they arrived.

Amelia Earhart was said to have flown here May 22, 1934.

Geography
The town is located in western Franklin County and extends west into Lake Champlain to the border with Grand Isle County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 60.5 square miles (156.8 km2), of which 37.0 square miles (95.9 km2) is land and 23.5 square miles (60.9 km2), or 38.84%, is water.[2] The southwest part of the town fronts on St. Albans Bay, an arm of Lake Champlain. Woods Island, Burton Island, and Ball Island within the lake are all part of the town.

Historic buildings on Main and Church Streets grace Taylor Park, one of Vermont’s largest downtown greens, where community events are held throughout the year. In the spring, visitors can experience 40 years of tradition and fun at the Vermont Maple Festival. Come summertime, local bands and artists step up to perform in the gazebo. The St. Albans Raid, the Age of Rail, and more can be explored at the St. Albans Historical Museum.

Whether downtown St. Albans is your destination or just a stop along the way as you explore the farms and rural centers of Franklin County, you can be sure to find something worthwhile around every corner.

Winooski History

5000 years ago! That is when archaeological research reveals that a single family band came to what is now the City of Winooski.
Harvesting the ample butternuts that grew here, the family soon moved on, but their prehistoric campground has become one of Vermont’s most significant archaeological sites. Other native people came to Winooski in the years that followed.

Time too has moved on. But Winooski has continued to play an important role in Vermont’s history and development. In the early 1770’s Ira Allen “led a people through a wilderness of 70 miles” to construct a formidable blockhouse on the Winooski (then “Onion”) River which served both as a fort and as general store and office for the land-speculating Onion River Company. “Fort Frederick” was never used for defense, but its protective presence increased value of Onion River property and advanced local settlement.

After the Revolutionary War, Ira Allen returned to build a dam across the Winooski River with sawmills at each end. The use of the Winooski falls to generate energy had begun; it would continue into the 20th Century with the construction of water-powered mills on both sides of the river. Ira himself built a house on the present site of the Winooski Block around 1785 and enjoyed a garden which was described as “a paradise of fruits and flowers.”

The Winooski mills’ fortunes mirrored the highs and lows of American economic life and labor and eventually led to Winooski’s becoming a separate City on March 7, 1922. When the mills closed in 1954, Winooski was devastated, but the federally-funded Model Cities program, Community Development Block Grants, Urban Development Action Grants, and other public and private investment and effort enabled the City to experience a “Renaissance” in the 1980’s with the rehabilitation of deserted mill buildings and the revitalization of the City’s downtown. Two examples follow:

The Woolen Mill, a generally vacant and under-utilized former textile mill, located in the National Historical Mill District, was transformed into a vibrant combination of living and working space, including 163 apartments, and 20,000 square feet of office space. Overlooking the natural beauty of the falls on the Winooski River, and a dominant architectural feature in the downtown, this building was a key element of the downtown revitalization effort.

The Champlain Mill, also located in the heart of the district along the Winooski River, stood under-utilized for over twenty years as it passed through a series of multipurpose industrial uses. In 1981, the Champlain Mill was renovated into three floors of retail commercial space and two floors of office space. In the Champlain Mill’s 175,000 square feet, stores, restaurants and several offices have been established.

Obviously, a great deal has changed since people came to pick butternuts here 5,000 years ago!

More Information About Winooski

The name comes from the Abenaki for “wild onions”, plentiful along the river. The earliest European documentation offering a written approximation of the native word are French-made maps, which identify the river as “Ouinousqui”.

In the southeast corner of Colchester was a fine natural falls in the Winooski (then Onion or French) River (more River info here) where Ira Allen, one of the grantees of Colchester, built grain and lumber mills in about 1772. To protect their interests from marauding French and Indians, he and his cousin Remember Baker built a two-story palisaded enclosure which they called Fort Frederick. Good land nearby attracted settlers, and the community which grew up around the mills and the fort became known as Allen’s Settlement, later as Winooski Falls, then simply Winooski when it was incorporated as a civil entity separate from Colchester.

The large number of French Canadians who came to work in the textile mills in later years resulted in a portion of the city being referred to as French Village.

In the late Seventies, it was suggested that Winooski be covered with a dome as a means of saving energy, snow removal and other municpal costs. The suggestion was especially interesting to Community Development Director Mark Tigan, who vigorously investigated the possibility, making national (and apparently, worldwide) news in the process. More than one aaplication to the US Department of Energy, asking for funds to study the idea, were turned down, and the enthusiam went away. But that’s not the end of it…

In July of 2008, Virtual Vermont Internet Magazine received an inquiry from Chen Bai of Shanghai, asking for information on Winooski’s “giant umbrella.” Seems that Bai’s daughter’s 6th grade textbook contains a writeup about a clear plastic umbrella covering the city (supported by an 11-story central tube) which can be opened and closed at will. The story is apparently quite popular in mainland China. Bai sent pictures of the textbook cover and the article itself, along with a translation (all available here). The texbook even contains an artist’s concept of what Winooski looks like, complete with hot air balloons, under its umbrella (there’s no resemblance that we can discern). We provided Bai with the real story. See this article from the Burlington Free Press.

Windshield Repair in Vermont

Should you repair your auto glass?

Small chips and pits in your vehicles auto glass can easily be ignored. They are small, but over time small chips become small cracks and then large cracks.   Once this happens an auto glass repair becomes as auto glass replacement.

If your windshield cracks across the entire windshield it can disrupt the drivers view and make driving unsafe.

Another concern when your windshield has a crack is the passenger compartment of your car is designed to be a safety shell to protect you in case of a collision.

If the windshields integrity is compromised with a rock chip or a crack the airbag may not deploy properly and may compromise the structure and stability of the passenger side.

This could all start from a small chip or pit in the glass.

The best way to prevent this from happening is to have your windshield repaired.  These can be critical services to ensure the integrity of your windshield.

It only takes a few minutes and most insurance companies will waive your deductible, so it may end up costing nothing by your time.

Windshield Repair

Why have your auto glass repaired?

  1. It only takes a few minutes
  2. It cost little to no money
  3. It is safer for you and your family in the event of a collision.

If the damaged area on your windshield is smaller than a quarter, then it is repairable.

Auto glass repair is a permanent process that removes air from the break and fills it with resin.  This process will bond the glass together and restore the strength and structural integrity of your auto glass.

The main purpose of a repair is to prevent the damaged area from spreading further. Even though it is possible for you to still see 20 -40% of the damaged area it should stop the damaged area from spreading.

In some cases, even though your windshield is repaired, it will still crack further.   Then the only alternative would be to replace the windshield.

Windshield repair is economical, safe and effective. Every auto glass repair is different.  Some are repairable and some, even though they are repaired, will crack further. Read more about car glass repair.

About St.

Windshield Replacement

Windshield Replacement in Vermont

Approximately 75% of damaged windshields can be repaired instead of being replaced.

If caught in time a windshield repair can be done as long as the damage is not in the drivers line of vision and the damaged area can fit under a quarter.

If the damaged windshield is left untreated, small cracks can expand leaving the only option as a windshield replacement.

It is always advisable to have your windshield repaired quickly.  Dirt can work its way into the damaged area affecting the effectiveness and clarity of the windshield repair.

Just because you have a chip or crack in your windshield, this does not mean you will have to have a windshield replacement. Modern technology makes it possible to repair windshields that would previously needed to be replaced. Not only does this save your windshield from replacement, it would also save you money.

The cost of a windshield repair is approximately $69.  Where the cost of a windshield replacement will vary for each vehicle.

Some of the factors that play a part in the cost of a windshield replacement are:

  1. Year , make and model of vehicle.
  2. If the windshield is heated.
  3.  If the vehicle has a rain sensor
  4. If the vehicle has an automatic diming rear view mirror.

Where can you have your windshield replacement done?

  1. Automotive glass specialist.
They specialize in windshield repair and windshield replacement along with side and rear windows.
  2. Windshield repair facility.
These facilities only specialize in windshield repairs.
  3. New car dealers.
Local dealers can replace your windshield with OEM (original equipment manufacturer)  glass.
  4. Mobile glass repair and replacement services.
