About Stowe Vermont

Stowe is a premier four season resort destination particularly reknowned for its alpine and Nordic recreation, mountain biking, hiking and world class spas. The community comes alive with festivals, shopping and dining opportunities with activities for everyone in all seasons. Stowe has made the most out of its natural setting– Mount Mansfield, the forests and fields, clear mountain streams and fine air to carve out an appealing, enduring, distinctively New England style of life. What makes it truly special is that Stowe is also a place people call home…

History Of Stowe

Although chartered as a town in 1763, Stowe’s first settlers did not arrive until 30 years later in 1793. By the dawn of the 19th century, most of Stowe’s land had been sold, and the population had grown to 316. Today, Stowe is Vermont’s largest town in land area with over 50,000 acres and a permanent population of over 4,000. Vermont’s highest peak, Mt. Mansfield, and some of the finest agricultural and woodland in the state are located within this land area.

The agriculture and lumber industries were essential to the town in Stowe’s early years. At one time, over 75% of the land in Stowe and most of Vermont was open land that had been cleared by lumber-production and was used for agriculture – primarily sheep farming. As many as 8,000 sheep grazed the hills and valleys of Stowe in those days.

Stowe’s farming fortunes fluctuated with the rest of New England agriculture. Eventually, most of Vermont shifted from sheep to dairy farms with more than 100 farms located in Stowe alone. Only nine of these farms continue to operate today. Over the years, this shift allowed 75% of the cleared land to reforest.

Unlike most of Vermont, Stowe’s history does not center exclusively around farming. By the mid-1800’s, Stowe had developed into a famous summer resort due to its spectacular mountain scenery and good transportation connections. The Toll Road to the top of Mt. Mansfield was completed by 1870; the Summit House on the top of Mt. Mansfield was finished just as the Civil War broke out, and the stately 300-room Mansfield House occupied most of the present village. Known as the “Big Hotel”, the Mansfield House burned to the ground in 1889.

A large stable housing over 100 horses, tack, carriages and stable hands, was located behind the “Big Hotel” at the present site of the Green Mountain Inn’s Annex wing. This barn was eventually torn down as a fire hazard in 1953, and several of the original beams were used in constructing The Whip Bar & Grill.

The Depot Building, located adjacent to the Green Mountain Inn, was built in 1897 as a depot for the Mt. Mansfield Electric Railway. Running the 11 miles between Waterbury and Stowe, this train carried both passengers and freight until 1932. The Depot Building is now connected to the Inn by a bridge, housing 16 guest rooms and a variety of shops on the lower levels.

Summer tourism remained vital to Stowe’s economic life through the First World War. 1913 marked the beginning of a new era in the history of Stowe when three resident Swedish families took to traveling around town on long wooden boards with upturned ends. This new form of transportation piqued the curiosity of the local citizenry. It did not take long for many townspeople to become hooked on this strange new sport, and skiing found a home in Stowe. This turning point marked the launching of what was to become Stowe’s true destiny.

In 1921, Stowe held its first Winter Carnival with ski jumping, skating, and myriad other fun-filled events. Downhill skiing, however, would not truly develop in Stowe until the Great Depression, when the Civilian Conservation Corps established camps and began clearing ski trails on Mt. Mansfield. The first, constructed in 1933, was the Bruce Trail that led from the present site of the Octagon to Ranch Camp. This trail is now incorporated into the Mt. Mansfield Ski Touring trail system. In 1934, the next – and perhaps most famous – ski trail was cut: the Nose Dive. In the early days, skiers hiked the 2.5 miles to the summit. Rope tows emerged as an easier method, only to be supplanted by chairlifts, beginning with a single chair in 1940. This venerable chair operated until 1986, when it was retired in favor of a high-speed detachable quad.

The Vermont Ski Museum, next door to the inn was established in 1988, but relocated to Stowe in 2000, with the mission of collecting, preserving and celebrating Vermont’s skiing and snowboarding history. The Museum has assembled the definitive collection of Vermont skiing and snowboard artifacts and memorabilia.  It has produced videos and films honoring Vermont athletes and pioneers as Hall of Fame inductees.  The Museum implements numerous exciting and memorable programs each year, including exhibit grand openings, exclusive speakers and collection showings, film festivals and much more. They also have a gift shop on premises. For more information on hours and becoming a member, with $1400 in benefits, visit VTSSM.com.

Skiing and the town of Stowe expanded steadily over the years as interest in the sport grew. In the process, Stowe established its reputation as one of the premier ski resorts and vacation destinations in the world. Today, Stowe offers guests an outstanding variety of year round recreational activities, attractions and special events from world-class skiing and riding terrain to myriad on-mountain programs and off-mountain activities capable of satisfying the most discerning travelers. With the newest and fastest lift service on the East Coast, Stowe’s two gondola-connected mountains offer skiers and riders of all levels an unparalleled experience. In June 2014, Spruce Peak Realty broke ground on an ambitious phase of development, named “Spruce Peak Center. This 150,000 square foot phase will signal the completion of the core of Spruce Peak. Spruce Peak Center will include: the Adventure Center—a recreation/activity space for children of all ages featuring the Stowe Mountain Resort children’s ski school; The Stowe Mountain Club clubhouse building, which will offer members private dining, lounge space, lockers/ski valet and underground parking; the community green/winter ice rink—a recreation and gathering space in the summer and a 9,000+ SF rink in the winter; the Pavilion, a concert venue and market area; and the Club Residences–19 penthouse residences that offer ski/in ski out access, convenient access to club amenities, and unmatched views of Mt. Mansfield, the village center and the Spruce Peak slopes. Spruce Peak Center is expected to be completed by winter 2016. Once completed, Spruce Peak Center will be the largest geo-thermal project in the state of Vermont, furthering Spruce Peak’s dedication to its environmental vision.

About Highgate Vermont

A totally fanciful story about the town’s name says there was once a toll road closed by a very high gate, and that people began saying they were “going to High Gate” when traveling to the area. Not even acceptable as folklore, for the area had no roads at all when Benning Wentworth named the town.

Wentworth probably had the well-known London suburb of Highgate in mind. That area did take its name from an old gatehouse which had been an important part of London’s defenses, but dismantled by Wentworth’s time. There are but two other Highgates in the world, both known to have been named for the London suburb: Ontario, Canada and St. Mary’s Parish, Jamaica.

John Godfrey Saxe (1816-1887) was born here: lawyer, educator, newspaper editor, state’s attorney, collector of customs, gubernatorial candidate, lecturer. It was, however, as a poet that he gained his greatest fame. His poems are still included in anthologies of American verse, and his story “Four Blind Men and an Elephant”, the classic treatise on differing viewpoints, is one of the most successful children’s picture books.

Little Blurb About Highgate

Highgate is a town in Franklin County, of the “Islands & Farms” region and is home to the largest egg farm in Vermont. The town is on the border of Quebec, Canada and is a border town of Philipsburg, Quebec.

The Grateful Dead played two shows in Highgate at the Franklin County Airport, one in July 1994 and one in June 1995. An estimated 60,000 people attended in 1994 and an estimated 100,000 in 1995, when Bob Dylan opened.

One notable person from the area was John Godfrey Saxe, a poet perhaps best known for his re-telling of the Indian parable “The Blindmen and the Elephant”, which introduced the story to a Western audience.

About Swanton Vermont

The Town of Swanton is one of the most attractive communities in Vermont.  It is located in the northwestern corner of the state bordering Lake Champlain on its west and Quebec Province in Canada on its north.  Interstate 89, Vermont Route 78, and U.S. Route 7 are the major transportation routes through the town.  These routes meet in the village center to form a foundation for the town’s vibrant commercial hub, which is made up of a mixture of family-owned businesses, national stores, and a variety of residential housing types, as well as the municipal offices, village police & fire departments, and the Swanton Elementary School.  Numerous industries surround the Village Center and the outlying areas of town are residential and agricultural in nature. The scenic Missisquoi River meanders through Swanton and over the Village Dam before flowing gently into Lake Champlain via the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge. The river and lake are important segments of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail that stretches from northcentral New York to the far reaches of northern Maine.

The earliest inhabitants of this region dating back about 10,000 years were the Abenaki whose tribal headquarters and museum are located in Swanton.  The town was chartered on August 17, 1763 by New Hampshire Governor Benning Wentworth when this territory was claimed as part of that state.  Swanton’s rich history can be explored at the Swanton Historical Museum.

The Town of Swanton is a separate governmental entity from the Village of Swanton which was chartered within the Town in 1888. The Village has a fire department and a police department. It also operates an electric department and provides water and sewer services to the Village as well as part of the Town.  A link to the Village website is located down below on the right.  Links to the different Village departments can be found by clicking the USEFUL LINKS button at the bottom of the lower left column on this page.

Today, approximately 6,500 people make the Town of Swanton (including the Village area) their home.  It is a safe, healthy, pleasant place in which to live and work and an exciting place to visit.

We hope you enjoyed your stay here & will visit again. Merci beaucoup. Revenez!

Swanton History

It has become popular to ascribe New England place names to English sources, and Swanton is no exception. Some writers have suggested that the Vermont town is named for Swanton, Kent, and some enthusiasts have gone on to say that the name means “a swan’s town”. Queen Elizabeth II did send a pair of Royal swans to Vermont’s Swanton in honor of the bicentennial of the town’s granting, but the fact is that the Kentish name actually derives from “town of the swineherds”.

The source of the name can more likely be found in William Swanton, a British naval officer who commanded a squadron at the time of the capture of Louisbourg in 1760; it was his timely arrival that dealt the final coup de grâce to the already almost overwhelmed French fleet. After the war, Swanton (then a captain) retired from the navy and settled in Bath, Maine, where he established a shipyard that was already famous for its custom-built ships when Benning Wentworth named this town in 1763.

Swanton is one of the few places in Vermont where Natives are known to have had a permanent settlement. From about 1700 to 1758, the important Abnaki village of Missisiasuk was on the Missisquoi River. The village’s name, meaning “people of the great grassy meadows”, helps to bear out the translation of Missiquoi itself as “great grassy meadows”. The Abnaki name for the mouth of the river was Maskwenozakek, literally “the place where muskelunge abound”, which would have been a good enough reason in itself for establishing a village nearby.

About Burlington Vermont

Burlington is vibrant, entrepreneurial and historic, yet innovative. It’s a city that has kept its charm while also being positively edgy. Locals and visitors alike enjoy Burlington’s walkable downtown, its abundance of parks and cheerful streets ripe for exploring the city’s dining, shopping and abundance of arts. Foodies will savor exploring the chocolateries, breweries and farm-to-table restaurants offering local meats, the freshest produce and world-renowned cheeses and maple. Outdoors enthusiasts are drawn to Waterfront Park, where in addition to miles of recreation paths north and southbound, the city’s nearby beaches are prime for an afternoon swim, kayak or paddleboard. There are also opportunities to learn to sail or take a sunset cruise. Of course, after sunset, enjoy downtown Burlington’s nightlife at its theaters, bars and brew pubs – many of which are host to a festive live music scene.

25 Things To Know About Burlington

It may be the largest city in the Green Mountain state, but to residents and visitors alike, Burlington feels more like a small town. Situated on the shores of Lake Champlain, it’s home to just under 43,000 residents along with a thriving collection of local businesses, from cozy cafes to arts and crafts stores and brewpubs. Even a now-famous ice cream parlor started by two childhood friends still maintains its local flavor. Here are a few things you might not know about Burlington, Vermont.

1. It was established as part of the New Hampshire Grants, which colonial governor Benning Wentworth doled out beginning in 1749 as a way to alleviate overcrowding in Massachusetts and Connecticut. The Burlington grant recipients, which included 64 families, began settling the area in 1763 but were interrupted by the outbreak of the Revolutionary War.
2. Nobody’s really sure where the name came from. One theory holds that Wentworth named the town after Richard Boyle, the 3rd Earl of Burlington, as a way to gain favor from the powerful Englishman. Another holds that it was named for the wealthy Burling family, who owned land throughout New York.

3. One of the first naval battles of the Revolutionary War took place nearby on Lake Champlain. The Battle of Valcour Island pitted a colonial force of 15 ships, led by none other than Benedict Arnold, against 25 British ships. The outgunned Americans were defeated, but their resistance stalled the British expansion into the Hudson Valley. If Arnold had died during that skirmish, historians believe, he likely would be considered a war hero.

4. Burlington was home to Ethan Allen, a folk hero credited by many as the father of Vermont. Born in Connecticut, Allen and his Green Mountain Boys defended land established by the New Hampshire Grants against competing claims from New Yorkers. In 1775, Allen and his militia captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British, securing a decisive early victory in the American Revolution. A fierce fighter and leader, Allen was a philosopher and a published author, to boot.

5. During the War of 1812, Burlington served as a base for nearly 4000 U.S. troops. The influx strained the city’s resources and increased tensions between soldiers and citizens. After town officials arrested several soldiers on charges of theft, a band of their comrades marched on the jail and freed them.

6. In 1813, British ships fired upon an American fleet docked in Burlington. The ensuing naval duel, which lasted only 20 minutes and had zero casualties, marked the only battle ever fought within city limits.

7. The 1823 opening of the Champlain Canal, which connected Lake Champlain to New York’s Hudson River, signaled the beginning of Burlington’s prominence as a port town. By the mid 1800s, the city was the third largest lumber port in the nation.

8. To expand their bustling port system, Burlington officials created more space. Over the course of a century, 60 acres worth of fill from construction projects went into Lake Champlain, expanding the shoreline further out into the water.

9. The University of Vermont, founded in 1791, declared support for freedom of religion in its charter, making it the first institution of higher learning to do so. It was also one of the first universities to admit female students, in 1871.

10. The university’s designation, UVM, does not stand for “University of Vermont,” as many believe. Rather, it stands for the Latin “Universitas Viridis Montis,”or “University of the Green Mountains.”

11. The Church Street Marketplace, Burlington’s busy pedestrian shopping walk, was inspired by a market in Copenhagen called the Stroget. A local architecture student observed the Stroget in 1962 and began lobbying officials to create something similar in Burlington. In 1980, Burlington closed off two downtown blocks along Church Street to traffic, and a year later the Church Street Marketplace officially opened.

12. The Fletcher Free Library, established in 1871, lets residents check out gardening tools in addition to books, CDs, and DVDs.

13. Every summer, Burlington hosts the Festival of Fools, an event dedicated to “the age-old tradition of busking” that features world-renowned street performers along Church Street and in City Hall Park.

14. It was the site of the world’s first international hockey match, in 1886, between the Montreal Crystals and members of the local Van Ness House hockey team. The game, which took place during the Burlington Winter Carnival, resulted in a 3-0 win for the Canadians.

15. Its nickname, “the Queen City,” originated with a speech given by Burlington’s first mayor more than 150 years ago. “We represent a young city, which may in time be known and distinguished as the Queen City of New England,” said Albert L. Catlin during his 1866 commencement address, establishing a lofty vision for the northern outpost.

16. In 1978, childhood friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield opened an ice cream shop in a renovated filling station. Despite having no experience besides a $5 correspondence course in ice-cream making, the two established what quickly became a local favorite. The rest is sweet, sweet history.

17. The band Phish formed at the University of Vermont in 1983. Their first gig was at the university’s Harris-Mills Cafeteria.

18. From 1981 to 1989, Burlington was feeling the Bern—Bernie Sanders, specifically, who served four consecutive terms as mayor.

19. The tallest building in Burlington, Decker Towers, is just 11 stories. It’s also the tallest building in the state, making it the shortest-tallest building of any state in the nation.

20. For five years, Burlington played partial home (along with the city of Barre) to a semi-pro basketball team called the Frost Heaves. Owned by Sports Illustrated writer Alexander Wolff, the Heaves won the American Basketball Association title in its first two seasons, then folded in 2011 after declining attendance.

21. There aren’t enough cooks in the kitchen—literally. Burlington’s labor force hasn’t kept up with its culinary expansion, leaving the city desperate for chefs, line order cooks and restaurant workers in general. The president of the New England Culinary Institute has called the situation “a crisis.”

22. Burlington is the 38th most popular name for American cities and towns, with 34 total, according to the U.S. Census. There’s a Burlington, North Carolina and a Burlington, Colorado, among others.

23. Every summer, teams of rowers face off in the Dragon Boat Festival on Lake Champlain. Modeled after a similar type of long boat from ancient China, each dragon boat is 41 feet long and holds upwards of 20 rowers. Proceeds from the event go to local cancer charities.

24. According to a recent assessment, 30% of the traffic in downtown Burlington is comprised of drivers searching for parking. The city claims to have ample parking, and is working to improve signs and other tools to direct motorists to vacant spots.

25. It’s one of the most environmentally progressive cities in the nation. Earlier this year, Burlington became the first city to source 100% of its residential energy from renewable sources.

Belvidere History

BELVIDERE VERMONT, a very mountainous, pentagonal shaped town, located in the northwestern corner of the county, in 44° 47′ north latitude, and in longitude 4° 19′ east from Washington, is bounded north by Avery’s Gore, and Montgomery, in Franklin county, east by Eden, south by Johnson and Waterville, and west by Waterville. It was granted to a Mr. John Kelley, of New York city, March 5, 1787, and chartered by Vermont, November 14, 1791, by the name of Belvidere. The town originally contained an area of 30,100 acres, but was shorn of its limits November 15, 1824, when a portion of its territory was taken towards forming the town of Waterville, and again, October 30, 1828, 13,440 acres were annexed to Eden so that Belvidere now has an area of less than 20,000 acres.

In surface, the town is extremely broken and irregular, some of the mountains attaining an elevation of from 2,000 to 3,000 feet, so that for agricultural purposes it is of little value, though there are some good farms found along the streams, where the soil is principally a clay loam. To compensate for this deficiency, however, Belvidere has, aside from a variety of wild and picturesque scenery, many thousand feet of valuable timber standing in her forests. The manufacture of this timber into lumber, and into manufactured articles, butter tubs, sap buckets, etc., constitutes the principal occupation of the inhabitants, and is the source of the principal exports of the town. The higher peaks and ridges of the territory are covered with immense quantities of spruce and hemlock, while the lower portions abound with maple, white and yellow birch, etc. The maple yields an excellent quality of sugar, many thousand pounds of which find their way to market annually. North Branch. flows through the center of the town, from east to west, affording many excellent mill-sites, several of which are utilized. This stream forms the water-course of the town, and into it flow the waters of Rattling, Basin, Mill, and several other brooks. All of the streams are noticeable for their clear, cold water, and are quite plentifully supplied with trout.

The geological structure of the town is composed of rocks principally of the talcose schist and gneiss formations. The former underlies the western half, and the latter the eastern half of the township. The large bed of schist is cut in several places by beds of steatite, or soapstone, many deposits of which bid fair to develop into quarries of value. Gold in alluvium is said to have been discovered in the extreme western portion of the town, though in very small quantities. A bed of saccharoid azoic limestone also exists, near the line of Bakersfield. Iron and led ores, too, have been discovered in limited quantities, yet sufficient to warrant the belief that mines of considerable value might be developed. Current tradition has it that an Indian at one time took one of the first settlers with him upon Belvidere mountain, and there cut from a ledge a chunk of very pure led ore, which he afterwards run into bullets. There were indications from the cuts in the ledge, so it is said, that there were large quantities of lead, and that the Indian had frequently been there before to procure it. The settler thought to mark the place with his eye, and his route back, so as to return, but the wily savage crossed and re-crossed his steps so many times on their return, that the man lost all traces of the spot containing the treasure, and was never able to find the place afterwards.

In 1882, Belvidere had a population of 400, was divided into five school districts, and contained five common schools, employing nine female teachers at an aggregate salary of $430.10. There were 509 pupils attending common school, while the entire cost of the schools for the year, ending October 31st, was $466.10, with R. D. Whittemore school superintendent.

Middlebury History

THE rapid settlement of the territory of the State of Vermont was long postponed by the fact that it was a thoroughfare of the war parties of the French and Indians on their way to the southward and eastward from Canada and Lake Champlain; and but little progress was made in that direction until the conquest of Canada by the English in 1760. Benning Wentworth was appointed in 1741, by the king of England, governor of the province of New Hampshire, and given authority to issue patents for lands to applicants, in any unoccupied territory. Under this authority he claimed the right to issue charters over what is now the State of Vermont. His first charter within its boundaries was for the town of Bennington in 1749, and in the next year this was followed by the charter of Pownal; about a dozen towns had also been chartered east of the Green Mountains; but no grants were made in the more dangerous western part of the State until 1761, in which year, the banners of peace having been uplifted over the territory of the ” New Hampshire Grants,” as this region came to be known, there was a rapid movement to secure charters to the territory, no less than sixty having been granted in the year named within the present limits of the Green Mountain State. Among the number was Middlebury, as well as eight other Addison county towns.

Among the residents of Salisbury, Conn., were a number of men who, with others, united for the purpose of procuring town charters of lands in this county and engaged John Evarts, of Salisbury, to act as their agent. Procuring the needed assistance, he came into the wilderness until he reached the region along the east side of Otter Creek, before he found unoccupied territory. Here he discovered that there was sufficient land to constitute three towns of the proposed extent–six miles square–between the “Great Falls” at Vergennes on the north, and Leicester on the south: hence he proceeded to survey the entire tract. He began at the head of the falls (which was fixed upon as a permanent starting point and boundary), laid out the town of New Haven and followed with Middlebury and Salisbury. Some of the original applicants agreed to take shares in two and others in all three of these towns, making out the requisite number of grantees in each instance. The charters of Middlebury and New Haven were dated November 2, 1761, and that of Salisbury on the next day. By the charters all of these towns are bounded west by Otter Creek, and extend where necessary up the slopes of the Green Mountains for the eastern boundary. The charters were made in the customary form, which is so well known that it need not be given here entire. It granted in this instance to those “whose names are entered on this grant, to be divided to and amongst them into sixty-eight equal shares,” a tract “containing by admeasurement 25,040 acres, which tract is to contain something more than six miles square.” The charter gives the boundaries as follows:

“Beginning at the southerly corner of a township granted this day by the name of New Haven, at a tree marked, standing on the bank of the easterly or northeasterly side of Otter Creek, so called, from thence running east seven miles, thence turning off and running south ten degrees west six miles and sixty-four rods, then turning off end running west to Otter Creek aforesaid; then down said creek, as that runs to the bound first mentioned,” and it “is incorporated into a township by the name of Middlebury.” It also provides “that the first meeting for the choice of town officers shall be held on the first Tuesday in January next, which said meeting shall be notified by Capt. Samuel Moore, who is hereby also appointed moderator of the said first meeting,” and that “the annual meeting forever hereafter for the choice of such officers for the said town shall be on the second Tuesday of March annually.”

The following are the names written on the back of the charter: John Evarts, Elijah Skinner, Elkanah Paris, Benjamin Paris, John Baker, Gideon Hurlbut, Ebenr. Hanchit, Deliva. Spalding, Noah Chittenden, Mattw. Bostwick, Thomas Chittenden, John Abbit, Moses Read, Saml. Keep, Elisha Painter, Ruluff White, Elisha Shelden, Jun., Moses Read, Jun., Matthw. Baldin, Lt. Come visit our community anytime, there are many ways to enjoy our Town Forest, bike paths, and recreation facilities all year round. With our rich history of entrepreneurship, some of the world’s hardest working and most creative people, and an unparalleled quality of life, there is no better place than Barre Town to live, work, raise a family, grow a business, or just visit!

Barre History

On November 6, 1780, 19,900 acres of land which was west of the New Hampshire Grants and east of New York was chartered to William Williams and 60 others and given the name of Wildersburgh. This chartered land encompassed the area that is now known as the City of Barre and the Town of Barre. In 1788 John Goldsbury and Samuel Rogers brought their families here and began to settle the area. They were eventually joined by other people from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

On March 11, 1793, the first town meeting was held in the community. The name of the community was eventually changed to Barre. There is some debate about whether this occurred by auctioning off the right to the highest bidder or by means of a fist fight.

After the initial process of settling the community, the basic manufacturing enterprises of the day (saw mill, grist mill and bartering of food) were established. Barre started to develop in a different manner than the surrounding communities after the granite industry was established soon after the War of 1812. The development of this industry and other factors led to some population growth up until 1830. However, this growth leveled off for some fifty years thereafter. There were 2,012 residents in 1830 and just 2,060 in 1880.

The arrival of the railroad in Barre helped the granite industry become a major industry. The fame of this vast deposit of granite, which some geologist say is 4 miles long, 2 miles wide and 10 miles deep, Jone’s Brothers Granite Co. 1910soon spread to Europe and Canada. Large numbers of people migrated to Barre from Italy, Scotland, Spain, Scandinavia, Greece, Lebanon, Canada and a number of other countries. The population increased from 2,060 in 1880, to 6,790 in 1890, to 10,000 in 1894.

Over time, a major portion of the population came to reside in the lower valley portion of the Town which included different villages. For reasons best known to the people of the time, just under four square miles of the more populated area of the town was carved out in 1895, and the City of Barre was created by the action of the voters and the charter which was granted by the state legislature. The City of Barre has continued to exist as a separate governmental entity from the Town to this date.

Newport History

Founded, officially, in 1793, the city of Newport, Vermont (incorporated as a city in 1918) sits on the east shore of Lake Memphremagog – a 27-mile long lake that straddles the US and Canadian border. The city has a long and colorful history informed by it’s unique location on the lake and early introduction of the railway.

Early businesses in Newport centered around the lumber industry and of course the lake itself. Many original, historic buildings are still standing in the main downtown area  (including the Goodrich Memorial Library and the current federal courthouse) and are still in use as shops, restaurants and municipal buildings.

Today the city of Newport is a charming tourist town including specialty shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants, is home to thriving local businesses, like Poulin Grain, and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful farms in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

Newport, VT

Living in the Northeast Kingdom isn’t easy but it does have its pluses. The glory days of the huge hotels and tour boats on Lake Memphremagog are long gone. As late as the 1970’s, Newport was a bustling town with at least a half dozen famous named department stores on Main Street alone. The railroad was one of the best paying jobs in the region and manufacturing offered livable wages to families in the area. Unfortunately, many of these jobs and industries vanished in the early 1980’s resulting in Newport becoming a “sleepy little town with a beautiful lake”. Even the traditionally popular Spring fishing season became extinct over the years.

Yet, Lake Memphremagog remains one of Vermont’s most beautiful lakes and is breathtaking on a sunny day. A new lighthouse mock-up now stands near the former Newport railroad station, as a beacon of hope for the future. There are high hopes that with the recent expansion of nearby Jay Peak, new jobs and a new vitality will return to the Northeast Kingdom, particularly the Newport area. It would be well deserved for a region that has so much to offer.

About St. Johnsbury

The town was originally granted in 1760 as part of the New Hampshire Grants and named Bessborough. It was regranted by Vermont in 1786 as Dunmore, and settled the same year.

An early settler was Dr. Jonathan Arnold, a member of the Continental Congress and author of Rhode Island’s act of secession from the United Kingdom in May of 1776. Arnold left Rhode Island in 1787 and, with six other families, built homes at what is now the town center.

By 1790, the village had grown to 143 inhabitants, and the first town meeting took place in Arnold’s home that year, where the name St. Johnsbury was adopted. According to local lore, Vermont founder Ethan Allen himself proposed naming the town St. John in honor of his friend Jean de Crèvecœur, a French-born author and agriculturist and a friend of Benjamin Franklin (he was known in the United States as J. Hector St. John). According to this account, de Crèvecœur suggested instead the unusual St. Johnsbury to differentiate it from Saint John, New Brunswick. Information from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia VIA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Johnsbury,_Vermont

St. Johnsbury History

St. Johnsbury, Vermont – Town History

A Few Characteristics of St. Johnsbury, VT
St. Johnsbury, VT is the Shire town of Caledonia County. St. Johnsbury sits at an altitude of 697 feet, 72*, 01′ West and 44* 25′ North. Bordering towns are Waterford, Kirby, Lyndon, Danville and Barnet. The Town lies about 45 miles south of the Canadian border and has an area of about 21,000 acres. The population in 1995 (U.S.Census of Population & Housing Estimates) is 7,741, with 3,596 year round housing units and 19 seasonal units.

St. Johnsbury is located at the confluence of the Passumpsic, Moose and Sleeper’s Rivers. The Town is marked by a sharp difference in elevation. The principal business district is concentrated on Railroad Street in the Passumpsic Valley. Main Street, which runs parallel to Railroad Street, lies on a broad plateau, known as the Plain. Fine homes and prominent public buildings line Main Street. The two levels of the Town are connected by the steep and winding Eastern Avenue, also lined with businesses. The town is the largest in northeastern Vermont and has more diverse interests than commonly found in other towns in this area. The long-term presence of particular industries has influenced the evolution of the Town’s social character and architectural style.
St. Johnsbury flourished as an industrial town at the height of the Victorian era. Many consider St. Johnsbury the quintessential Victorian, industrial city, including the paternalism of the Fairbanks family and its anti-union attitude. In 1891 St. Johnsbury Illustrated was printed, a review of the town’s business, social, literary and educational facilities that provides glimpses of the Town’s picturesque surroundings.
The completion of Interstates I-93 and I-95 has made the area more accessible, causing real estate costs to rise.

Civic structure
King George granted the first charter in 1770 to Bessborough, later changed to Dunmore. There were few settlers until 1786 when Governor Chittenden granted a charter to Jonathan Arnold from Rhode Island. Arnold and his partners were from the same group of people that were granted a charter for Lyndon ten years before. The first settlers were four men of the Adams’ family, two Trescotts and one each of the Cole, Doolittle, Todd and Nichols families. St. Johnsbury’s first town meeting was held in Dr. Arnold’s house on June 21, 1790. The first US Census in 1790/91 lists 34 families and 143 inhabitants. There was a steady growth in population during the next century, 663 in 1800, 1334 in 1810 up to 7010 in 1900. In 1792 St. Johnsbury and other towns were set off from Orange County to form the new Caledonia County. In 1856 the County seat was moved from Danville to St. Johnsbury.
The Vermont Legislature granted St. Johnsbury permission to become a city, but the voters declined. The town operates with selectmen and a manager.

What’s in a name?
St. Johnsbury was named after Michel Guillaume St. Jean de Vrevecoeur, who was also known as J. Hector St. John, author of “Letters from an American Farmer”. St. John was a friend of George Washington and Ben Franklin, as well as a correspondent of Ethan Allen. He had an enthusiasm for the Republic of Vermont and for place names. He suggested the names Vergennes, Danville and St. Johnsbury. Realizing that several places already bore the name of St. John, J. Hector suggested the longer name, St. Johnsbury, which remains the only place with that name in the world. St. John became a naturalized citizen of the new country and in 1793 he was appointed to the post of French Consul in New York City.
Dr. Arnold, a surveyor, and a crew were surveying along the West Branch of the Passumpsic where the scale factory was later built. As the story goes, when the group traveled away from the river, they left their provisions, including certain necessary stimulants, with Thomas Todd. When they returned, Todd was rolled up against a log on the riverbank, sound asleep. Arnold woke him with a loud shout and made a proclamation, “let this branch be known forever by the name of Sleeper’s River”.
The station area of the Canadian Pacific Railroad was called Centervale. Also, before the village of St. Johnsbury engulfed them, there were the districts of Fairbanks, Paddock and Summerville all named for prominent business people of the era. During the last years of the 19th Century, the area in East St. Johnsbury near the railroad station was known as Griswold Station, for the stationmaster. On the Danville town line there was a village called Goss Hollow, named for David Goss who built the mills on the Sleeper’s River. The Plain, the upland pasture in the village, was once known as the “Gates of the Kingdom”. There was also once a hamlet called Coles Corner, a common St. Johnsbury family name.

Water Resources
The Passumpsic River flows southward through the center of town. Near the southwest corner of town, the Moose River feeds into the Passumpsic from the east and the Sleeper’s River flows in from the west. Nichols Pond is located in St. Johnsbury.
Mountains, Hills, Wetlands, etc.
The hills of St. Johnsbury are all 1500′ or lower: Saddleback, Mt. Pisgah, Hooker Hill, Bible Hill, Crow Hill and The Knob.

Land Use
The early settlers made use of the abundant waterpower to operate many different industries: sawmills, gristmills, starch factories, tanneries, foundries, hemp works, woolen mills, a fork and hoe factory, and the Fairbanks Iron Works which manufactured plows, stoves, carriages and the world-famous platform scales. The settlers also gathered sap from the maple trees for syrup and, in the early 1900s, maple products became an important industry.
In 1971 the Carl Lawrence Farm was given the Century Farm Award. The award acknowledges 100 years or more of ownership in the same family. John Ide, great, great, great, and grandfather of Carl Lawrence settled the land in 1792. Other members of the family were founders of the first Grange in Vermont.

St. Johnsbury is the site of the largest and most continuous esker in the region. An esker is a long, low, typically sinuous ridge of sand and gravel deposited along the course of a stream that tunneled through a wasting ice sheet. The oldest and most beautiful section of the town, the Plain, is on the crest of the esker and US Rt. 2 descends its steep flank along Eastern Avenue. The materials and cross sections of the esker are exposed in a sand and gravel pit at the south end of Main Street. Several other quarries operate along its 24-mile length along the Passumpsic to the north. Clear, clay-free materials of eskers are excellent for concrete and.phphalt aggregates, roadbeds and other construction uses.
The Passumpsic River flows southward through the center of town. Near the southwest corner of town, the Moose River feeds into the Passumpsic from the east and the Sleeper’s River flows in from the west. Nichols Pond is located in St. Johnsbury.

Businesses
The making of potash, primarily for the making of fertilizer, was the first industry in St. Johnsbury.
The Paddock Iron Works was established in 1828. The foundry used iron ore from Troy, bog iron from Lancaster, New Hampshire, and charcoal produced from St. Johnsbury trees. Stoves, plows and milling machinery were made.

Major Joseph Fairbanks and his three sons came from Brimfield, Massachusetts in 1815 and built a sawmill on the Sleeper’s River. The next year a gristmill was built and the sons employed themselves in a small wheelwright and foundry business, which made carriages, plows, hoes, and pitchforks. In 1834 the brothers, Erastus and Thaddeus, with Joseph P., founded the firm of E. & T. Fairbanks & Company. Thaddeus Fairbanks invented the platform scale, originally used to weigh hemp.
