Stroll through the historic district, hit the farmers market in the summertime, head for one of the museums or wander along the waterfront’s boardwalk.

Sweet Attractions

Newport is right in the heart of maple country. Head to Sugarmill Farm (sugarmillfarm.com) in nearby Barton to discover how maple syrup is made. Visitors can tour the sugar mill or take a leisurely walk through the mill’s orchards. On your way to the sugar mill, enjoy the historic covered bridge and maybe take a few pictures. If a trip to the local maple syrup farm doesn’t satisfy your sweet tooth, head for Newport’s historic Pick and Shovel (no website; 54 Coventry St., Newport, Vermont 05855; 802-334-8340). The general store sells its own homemade Tim & Doug’s ice cream.

Historic Locations

History comes alive in Newport. You can stroll the historic downtown and peruse the various boutiques or head to one of the museums. The Old Stone House Museum (oldstonehousemuseum.org) sits south of Newport. A stone dormitory known as Athenian Hall was built in 1863 by the nation’s first African-American college graduate. The building, in picturesque Brownington Village Historic District, has 21 rooms, each with exhibits depicting life in the 19th century, including tools, daily utensils, textiles, furniture and old photographs. Other historic houses, a barn and a gift shop are nearby.

Libraries and More

Haskell Public Library and Opera House (no website; 93 Caswell Ave., Derby Line, Vermont 05830; 802-873-3022, ext. 205) was built on the border between Canada and the United States — the border runs straight through the Kenneth Baldwin International Reading Room. The library has books in both English and French. Another local library, Goodrich Memorial Library (goodrichlibrary.org), was built in 1869. The lavish building features a dark wood interior, a large fireplace and numerous local history books.

Historic Tours

Along Newport’s historic lakefront runs the boardwalk. Beside the boardwalk sits the Gateway Center, the site of frequent public functions during summer such as a concert series. For a self-guided walking tour of town, pick up a map at the tourist information booth on the causeway. Along the way are numerous historical marker.

Newport keeps locals and tourists busy all four seasons. From skiing at Jay Peak to boating on Lake Memphremagog and downtown Newport in between, you’ll find something fun, beautiful and exciting to see all year long.
