Belvidere History

BELVIDERE VERMONT, a very mountainous, pentagonal shaped town, located in the northwestern corner of the county, in 44° 47′ north latitude, and in longitude 4° 19′ east from Washington, is bounded north by Avery’s Gore, and Montgomery, in Franklin county, east by Eden, south by Johnson and Waterville, and west by Waterville. It was granted to a Mr. John Kelley, of New York city, March 5, 1787, and chartered by Vermont, November 14, 1791, by the name of Belvidere. The town originally contained an area of 30,100 acres, but was shorn of its limits November 15, 1824, when a portion of its territory was taken towards forming the town of Waterville, and again, October 30, 1828, 13,440 acres were annexed to Eden so that Belvidere now has an area of less than 20,000 acres.

In surface, the town is extremely broken and irregular, some of the mountains attaining an elevation of from 2,000 to 3,000 feet, so that for agricultural purposes it is of little value, though there are some good farms found along the streams, where the soil is principally a clay loam. To compensate for this deficiency, however, Belvidere has, aside from a variety of wild and picturesque scenery, many thousand feet of valuable timber standing in her forests. The manufacture of this timber into lumber, and into manufactured articles, butter tubs, sap buckets, etc., constitutes the principal occupation of the inhabitants, and is the source of the principal exports of the town. The higher peaks and ridges of the territory are covered with immense quantities of spruce and hemlock, while the lower portions abound with maple, white and yellow birch, etc. The maple yields an excellent quality of sugar, many thousand pounds of which find their way to market annually. North Branch. flows through the center of the town, from east to west, affording many excellent mill-sites, several of which are utilized. This stream forms the water-course of the town, and into it flow the waters of Rattling, Basin, Mill, and several other brooks. All of the streams are noticeable for their clear, cold water, and are quite plentifully supplied with trout.

The geological structure of the town is composed of rocks principally of the talcose schist and gneiss formations. The former underlies the western half, and the latter the eastern half of the township. The large bed of schist is cut in several places by beds of steatite, or soapstone, many deposits of which bid fair to develop into quarries of value. Gold in alluvium is said to have been discovered in the extreme western portion of the town, though in very small quantities. A bed of saccharoid azoic limestone also exists, near the line of Bakersfield. Iron and led ores, too, have been discovered in limited quantities, yet sufficient to warrant the belief that mines of considerable value might be developed. Current tradition has it that an Indian at one time took one of the first settlers with him upon Belvidere mountain, and there cut from a ledge a chunk of very pure led ore, which he afterwards run into bullets. There were indications from the cuts in the ledge, so it is said, that there were large quantities of lead, and that the Indian had frequently been there before to procure it. The settler thought to mark the place with his eye, and his route back, so as to return, but the wily savage crossed and re-crossed his steps so many times on their return, that the man lost all traces of the spot containing the treasure, and was never able to find the place afterwards.

In 1882, Belvidere had a population of 400, was divided into five school districts, and contained five common schools, employing nine female teachers at an aggregate salary of $430.10. There were 509 pupils attending common school, while the entire cost of the schools for the year, ending October 31st, was $466.10, with R. D. Whittemore school superintendent.

Middlebury History

THE rapid settlement of the territory of the State of Vermont was long postponed by the fact that it was a thoroughfare of the war parties of the French and Indians on their way to the southward and eastward from Canada and Lake Champlain; and but little progress was made in that direction until the conquest of Canada by the English in 1760. Benning Wentworth was appointed in 1741, by the king of England, governor of the province of New Hampshire, and given authority to issue patents for lands to applicants, in any unoccupied territory. Under this authority he claimed the right to issue charters over what is now the State of Vermont. His first charter within its boundaries was for the town of Bennington in 1749, and in the next year this was followed by the charter of Pownal; about a dozen towns had also been chartered east of the Green Mountains; but no grants were made in the more dangerous western part of the State until 1761, in which year, the banners of peace having been uplifted over the territory of the ” New Hampshire Grants,” as this region came to be known, there was a rapid movement to secure charters to the territory, no less than sixty having been granted in the year named within the present limits of the Green Mountain State. Among the number was Middlebury, as well as eight other Addison county towns.

Among the residents of Salisbury, Conn., were a number of men who, with others, united for the purpose of procuring town charters of lands in this county and engaged John Evarts, of Salisbury, to act as their agent. Procuring the needed assistance, he came into the wilderness until he reached the region along the east side of Otter Creek, before he found unoccupied territory. Here he discovered that there was sufficient land to constitute three towns of the proposed extent–six miles square–between the “Great Falls” at Vergennes on the north, and Leicester on the south: hence he proceeded to survey the entire tract. He began at the head of the falls (which was fixed upon as a permanent starting point and boundary), laid out the town of New Haven and followed with Middlebury and Salisbury. Some of the original applicants agreed to take shares in two and others in all three of these towns, making out the requisite number of grantees in each instance. The charters of Middlebury and New Haven were dated November 2, 1761, and that of Salisbury on the next day. By the charters all of these towns are bounded west by Otter Creek, and extend where necessary up the slopes of the Green Mountains for the eastern boundary. The charters were made in the customary form, which is so well known that it need not be given here entire. It granted in this instance to those “whose names are entered on this grant, to be divided to and amongst them into sixty-eight equal shares,” a tract “containing by admeasurement 25,040 acres, which tract is to contain something more than six miles square.” The charter gives the boundaries as follows:

“Beginning at the southerly corner of a township granted this day by the name of New Haven, at a tree marked, standing on the bank of the easterly or northeasterly side of Otter Creek, so called, from thence running east seven miles, thence turning off and running south ten degrees west six miles and sixty-four rods, then turning off end running west to Otter Creek aforesaid; then down said creek, as that runs to the bound first mentioned,” and it “is incorporated into a township by the name of Middlebury.” It also provides “that the first meeting for the choice of town officers shall be held on the first Tuesday in January next, which said meeting shall be notified by Capt. Samuel Moore, who is hereby also appointed moderator of the said first meeting,” and that “the annual meeting forever hereafter for the choice of such officers for the said town shall be on the second Tuesday of March annually.”

The following are the names written on the back of the charter: John Evarts, Elijah Skinner, Elkanah Paris, Benjamin Paris, John Baker, Gideon Hurlbut, Ebenr. Hanchit, Deliva. Spalding, Noah Chittenden, Mattw. Bostwick, Thomas Chittenden, John Abbit, Moses Read, Saml. Keep, Elisha Painter, Ruluff White, Elisha Shelden, Jun., Moses Read, Jun., Matthw. Baldin, Lt. Jonathan Moore, John Benton, Nathl. Evarts, 3d, John Turner, Jun., Ebenr. Field, 3d, Saml. Turner, Zecheriah Foss, Ebenr. Field, Nathl. Flint, BenJn. Everist, Jeremiah How, John Read, James Claghorn, Lt. Mathias Kelsey, Daniel Morris, Rufus Marsh, Elias Read; Noah Waddams, John Evarts, Jun., Jona. Moore, Jun., Nathl. Skinner, Jun., David Hide, Jun., Thomas Chipman, Amos Hanchit, Saml. Towsley, John Strong, John How, Oliver Evarts, Russell Hunt, Capt. Josiah Stoddar, Bethel Sellick, Saml. Skinner, Capt. Saml. Moore, Hezekiah Camp, Jun., John McQuivey, Benjamin Smalley, Lt. John Seymour, Datis Ensign, Lt. Janna Meigs, David Owen, Charles Brewster, Theo. Atkinson, Esq., M. H. Wentworth, Esq.

The old governor looked after his own interest in the customary manner, as appears by the following, added to the foregoing signatures:

” His Excellency Benning Wentworth, Esq., a tract of land containing five hundred acres, as marked B. W. in the plan, which is to be accounted two of the within shares, one whole share for the Incorporated Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign parts, one share for a glebe for the Church of England, as by law established, one share for the first settled minister of the gospel, and one share for the benefit of a school in said town.

About Barre

THE TOWN OF BARRE

is home to four small unincorporated villages; including East Barre, Websterville, Graniteville, and South Barre. Each village has a post office, stores, a playground and churches. Barre Town is known for its large granite quarries, panoramic mountain views, beautiful natural scenery, outstanding school, great residential neighborhoods, modern recreation facilities and attractive industrial park. As an integral part of the Barre-Montpelier urban area, our families enjoy all the conveniences of an urban area while residing in some of the state’s most beautiful, rural environments. Come visit our community anytime, there are many ways to enjoy our Town Forest, bike paths, and recreation facilities all year round. With our rich history of entrepreneurship, some of the world’s hardest working and most creative people, and an unparalleled quality of life, there is no better place than Barre Town to live, work, raise a family, grow a business, or just visit!

Barre History

On November 6, 1780, 19,900 acres of land which was west of the New Hampshire Grants and east of New York was chartered to William Williams and 60 others and given the name of Wildersburgh. This chartered land encompassed the area that is now known as the City of Barre and the Town of Barre. In 1788 John Goldsbury and Samuel Rogers brought their families here and began to settle the area. They were eventually joined by other people from New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

On March 11, 1793, the first town meeting was held in the community. The name of the community was eventually changed to Barre. There is some debate about whether this occurred by auctioning off the right to the highest bidder or by means of a fist fight.

After the initial process of settling the community, the basic manufacturing enterprises of the day (saw mill, grist mill and bartering of food) were established. Barre started to develop in a different manner than the surrounding communities after the granite industry was established soon after the War of 1812. The development of this industry and other factors led to some population growth up until 1830. However, this growth leveled off for some fifty years thereafter. There were 2,012 residents in 1830 and just 2,060 in 1880.

The arrival of the railroad in Barre helped the granite industry become a major industry. The fame of this vast deposit of granite, which some geologist say is 4 miles long, 2 miles wide and 10 miles deep, Jone’s Brothers Granite Co. 1910soon spread to Europe and Canada. Large numbers of people migrated to Barre from Italy, Scotland, Spain, Scandinavia, Greece, Lebanon, Canada and a number of other countries. The population increased from 2,060 in 1880, to 6,790 in 1890, to 10,000 in 1894.

Over time, a major portion of the population came to reside in the lower valley portion of the Town which included different villages. For reasons best known to the people of the time, just under four square miles of the more populated area of the town was carved out in 1895, and the City of Barre was created by the action of the voters and the charter which was granted by the state legislature. The City of Barre has continued to exist as a separate governmental entity from the Town to this date.

Newport History

Founded, officially, in 1793, the city of Newport, Vermont (incorporated as a city in 1918) sits on the east shore of Lake Memphremagog – a 27-mile long lake that straddles the US and Canadian border. The city has a long and colorful history informed by it’s unique location on the lake and early introduction of the railway.

Early businesses in Newport centered around the lumber industry and of course the lake itself. Many original, historic buildings are still standing in the main downtown area  (including the Goodrich Memorial Library and the current federal courthouse) and are still in use as shops, restaurants and municipal buildings.

Today the city of Newport is a charming tourist town including specialty shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants, is home to thriving local businesses, like Poulin Grain, and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful farms in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont.

Newport, VT

Living in the Northeast Kingdom isn’t easy but it does have its pluses. The glory days of the huge hotels and tour boats on Lake Memphremagog are long gone. As late as the 1970’s, Newport was a bustling town with at least a half dozen famous named department stores on Main Street alone. The railroad was one of the best paying jobs in the region and manufacturing offered livable wages to families in the area. Unfortunately, many of these jobs and industries vanished in the early 1980’s resulting in Newport becoming a “sleepy little town with a beautiful lake”. Even the traditionally popular Spring fishing season became extinct over the years.

Yet, Lake Memphremagog remains one of Vermont’s most beautiful lakes and is breathtaking on a sunny day. A new lighthouse mock-up now stands near the former Newport railroad station, as a beacon of hope for the future. There are high hopes that with the recent expansion of nearby Jay Peak, new jobs and a new vitality will return to the Northeast Kingdom, particularly the Newport area. It would be well deserved for a region that has so much to offer.

About St. Johnsbury

The town was originally granted in 1760 as part of the New Hampshire Grants and named Bessborough. It was regranted by Vermont in 1786 as Dunmore, and settled the same year.

An early settler was Dr. Jonathan Arnold, a member of the Continental Congress and author of Rhode Island’s act of secession from the United Kingdom in May of 1776. Arnold left Rhode Island in 1787 and, with six other families, built homes at what is now the town center.

By 1790, the village had grown to 143 inhabitants, and the first town meeting took place in Arnold’s home that year, where the name St. Johnsbury was adopted. According to local lore, Vermont founder Ethan Allen himself proposed naming the town St. John in honor of his friend Jean de Crèvecœur, a French-born author and agriculturist and a friend of Benjamin Franklin (he was known in the United States as J. Hector St. John). According to this account, de Crèvecœur suggested instead the unusual St. Johnsbury to differentiate it from Saint John, New Brunswick. Information from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia VIA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._Johnsbury,_Vermont

St. Johnsbury History

St. Johnsbury, Vermont – Town History

A Few Characteristics of St. Johnsbury, VT
St. Johnsbury, VT is the Shire town of Caledonia County. St. Johnsbury sits at an altitude of 697 feet, 72*, 01′ West and 44* 25′ North. Bordering towns are Waterford, Kirby, Lyndon, Danville and Barnet. The Town lies about 45 miles south of the Canadian border and has an area of about 21,000 acres. The population in 1995 (U.S.Census of Population & Housing Estimates) is 7,741, with 3,596 year round housing units and 19 seasonal units.

St. Johnsbury is located at the confluence of the Passumpsic, Moose and Sleeper’s Rivers. The Town is marked by a sharp difference in elevation. The principal business district is concentrated on Railroad Street in the Passumpsic Valley. Main Street, which runs parallel to Railroad Street, lies on a broad plateau, known as the Plain. Fine homes and prominent public buildings line Main Street. The two levels of the Town are connected by the steep and winding Eastern Avenue, also lined with businesses. The town is the largest in northeastern Vermont and has more diverse interests than commonly found in other towns in this area. The long-term presence of particular industries has influenced the evolution of the Town’s social character and architectural style.
St. Johnsbury flourished as an industrial town at the height of the Victorian era. Many consider St. Johnsbury the quintessential Victorian, industrial city, including the paternalism of the Fairbanks family and its anti-union attitude. In 1891 St. Johnsbury Illustrated was printed, a review of the town’s business, social, literary and educational facilities that provides glimpses of the Town’s picturesque surroundings.
The completion of Interstates I-93 and I-95 has made the area more accessible, causing real estate costs to rise.

Civic structure
King George granted the first charter in 1770 to Bessborough, later changed to Dunmore. There were few settlers until 1786 when Governor Chittenden granted a charter to Jonathan Arnold from Rhode Island. Arnold and his partners were from the same group of people that were granted a charter for Lyndon ten years before. The first settlers were four men of the Adams’ family, two Trescotts and one each of the Cole, Doolittle, Todd and Nichols families. St. Johnsbury’s first town meeting was held in Dr. Arnold’s house on June 21, 1790. The first US Census in 1790/91 lists 34 families and 143 inhabitants. There was a steady growth in population during the next century, 663 in 1800, 1334 in 1810 up to 7010 in 1900. In 1792 St. Johnsbury and other towns were set off from Orange County to form the new Caledonia County. In 1856 the County seat was moved from Danville to St. Johnsbury.
The Vermont Legislature granted St. Johnsbury permission to become a city, but the voters declined. The town operates with selectmen and a manager.

What’s in a name?
St. Johnsbury was named after Michel Guillaume St. Jean de Vrevecoeur, who was also known as J. Hector St. John, author of “Letters from an American Farmer”. St. John was a friend of George Washington and Ben Franklin, as well as a correspondent of Ethan Allen. He had an enthusiasm for the Republic of Vermont and for place names. He suggested the names Vergennes, Danville and St. Johnsbury. Realizing that several places already bore the name of St. John, J. Hector suggested the longer name, St. Johnsbury, which remains the only place with that name in the world. St. John became a naturalized citizen of the new country and in 1793 he was appointed to the post of French Consul in New York City.
Dr. Arnold, a surveyor, and a crew were surveying along the West Branch of the Passumpsic where the scale factory was later built. As the story goes, when the group traveled away from the river, they left their provisions, including certain necessary stimulants, with Thomas Todd. When they returned, Todd was rolled up against a log on the riverbank, sound asleep. Arnold woke him with a loud shout and made a proclamation, “let this branch be known forever by the name of Sleeper’s River”.
The station area of the Canadian Pacific Railroad was called Centervale. Also, before the village of St. Johnsbury engulfed them, there were the districts of Fairbanks, Paddock and Summerville all named for prominent business people of the era. During the last years of the 19th Century, the area in East St. Johnsbury near the railroad station was known as Griswold Station, for the stationmaster. On the Danville town line there was a village called Goss Hollow, named for David Goss who built the mills on the Sleeper’s River. The Plain, the upland pasture in the village, was once known as the “Gates of the Kingdom”. There was also once a hamlet called Coles Corner, a common St. Johnsbury family name.

Water Resources
The Passumpsic River flows southward through the center of town. Near the southwest corner of town, the Moose River feeds into the Passumpsic from the east and the Sleeper’s River flows in from the west. Nichols Pond is located in St. Johnsbury.
Mountains, Hills, Wetlands, etc.
The hills of St. Johnsbury are all 1500′ or lower: Saddleback, Mt. Pisgah, Hooker Hill, Bible Hill, Crow Hill and The Knob.

Land Use
The early settlers made use of the abundant waterpower to operate many different industries: sawmills, gristmills, starch factories, tanneries, foundries, hemp works, woolen mills, a fork and hoe factory, and the Fairbanks Iron Works which manufactured plows, stoves, carriages and the world-famous platform scales. The settlers also gathered sap from the maple trees for syrup and, in the early 1900s, maple products became an important industry.
In 1971 the Carl Lawrence Farm was given the Century Farm Award. The award acknowledges 100 years or more of ownership in the same family. John Ide, great, great, great, and grandfather of Carl Lawrence settled the land in 1792. Other members of the family were founders of the first Grange in Vermont.

St. Johnsbury is the site of the largest and most continuous esker in the region. An esker is a long, low, typically sinuous ridge of sand and gravel deposited along the course of a stream that tunneled through a wasting ice sheet. The oldest and most beautiful section of the town, the Plain, is on the crest of the esker and US Rt. 2 descends its steep flank along Eastern Avenue. The materials and cross sections of the esker are exposed in a sand and gravel pit at the south end of Main Street. Several other quarries operate along its 24-mile length along the Passumpsic to the north. Clear, clay-free materials of eskers are excellent for concrete and.phphalt aggregates, roadbeds and other construction uses.
The Passumpsic River flows southward through the center of town. Near the southwest corner of town, the Moose River feeds into the Passumpsic from the east and the Sleeper’s River flows in from the west. Nichols Pond is located in St. Johnsbury.

Businesses
The making of potash, primarily for the making of fertilizer, was the first industry in St. Johnsbury.
The Paddock Iron Works was established in 1828. The foundry used iron ore from Troy, bog iron from Lancaster, New Hampshire, and charcoal produced from St. Johnsbury trees. Stoves, plows and milling machinery were made.

Major Joseph Fairbanks and his three sons came from Brimfield, Massachusetts in 1815 and built a sawmill on the Sleeper’s River. The next year a gristmill was built and the sons employed themselves in a small wheelwright and foundry business, which made carriages, plows, hoes, and pitchforks. In 1834 the brothers, Erastus and Thaddeus, with Joseph P., founded the firm of E. & T. Fairbanks & Company. Thaddeus Fairbanks invented the platform scale, originally used to weigh hemp. As a result of Thaddeus’ aggressive marketing of the company’s innovative products, the company’s volume of business doubled every three years.
St. Johnsbury expanded as the scale, maple, and wood products industries expanded. The quick growth of St. Johnsbury resulted in its becoming the county seat in 1856, a railroad junction, and an industrial, commercial and cultural crossroads of the region. It remains so today.

The Ide Company (now Blue Seal Feeds) is the Town’s oldest business and the oldest Grain Company in New England. The company started out in Passumpsic in 1813 and moved to St. Johnsbury in 1879. For 164 years the business remained in the Ide family.
George C. Cary founded the Cary Maple Sugar Company in 1904. He was successful in promoting the use of maple sugar for flavoring plug tobacco and as a moisturizing and non-fermenting flavoring agent in cigarettes. Mr. Cary built a large plant on Portland Street as well as an adjoining facility, known as Maple Grove Farms of Vermont. The company operates a museum and sugarhouse on the site. St. Johnsbury became known as the maple center of the world.
After 84 years on Railroad Street, the Hovey retail clothing empire is going out of business. Founder Carl Hovey sold his share of the business in 1945 which is located in three historic buildings. This large business retained its rural character; the owners know many customers by name and sometimes by inseam. Other business lost in recent years: St. Johnsbury Trucking, Mardon Industries, and North East Tool. (Burlington Free Press “No Room For Small Retailers” by Molly Walsh, 10/22/95, 1-8A.)
Other major manufacturers in St. Johnsbury include EHV-Weidmann Industries.
The Central Vermont Public Service Company provides electricity to St. Johnsbury.
The “Caledonia Record” provides daily newspaper service. Also published are the “New England Farmer” and “Turf Magazine”.
St. Johnsbury radio stations are: WSTJ 1340 AM , WNKV 105.5 FM and WSHX FM.

Railroads
Railroads became a major factor in the growth of St. Johnsbury starting in 1850, at one time four rail lines merged here. Presently St. Johnsbury is served by the Vermont Northern, Maine Central and Canadian Pacific. The former St. Johnsbury and Lake Champlain Railroad was known locally as “St. Jesus and Long Coming”.

About St. Albans

Saint Albans, commonly abbreviated as St. Albans, is a town in Franklin County, Vermont, in the United States. The population was 5,999 at the 2010 census, up from 5,086 at the 2000 census. The town completely surrounds the city of St. Albans.

History
The town was named for St Albans in England, which itself is named after the Early Christian British saint and protomartyr.

On October 19, 1864, St. Albans was the site of the St. Albans Raid, the northernmost Confederate land action of the American Civil War, which was an enemy cavalry raid and bank robbery across the border from Quebec, Canada. The town of St. Albans and the city of St. Albans were separated in 1902. References to “St. Albans” prior to this date generally refer to the town center, which now belongs to the city. The town was incorporated in 1859, and the city in 1902.

Henri Le Caron, who, while acting as a secret agent of the British government, held the position of “Inspector-General of the Irish Republican Army”, asserted that he distributed fifteen thousand stands of arms and almost three million rounds of ammunition in the care of the many trusted men stationed between New York and St. Albans, in preparation for the unsuccessful Fenian raid on Canada which took place in April 1870. United States General George Meade, forewarned, captured much of these munitions as they arrived.

Amelia Earhart was said to have flown here May 22, 1934.

Geography
The town is located in western Franklin County and extends west into Lake Champlain to the border with Grand Isle County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 60.5 square miles (156.8 km2), of which 37.0 square miles (95.9 km2) is land and 23.5 square miles (60.9 km2), or 38.84%, is water.[2] The southwest part of the town fronts on St. Albans Bay, an arm of Lake Champlain. It takes place for a number of reasons. For example, a piece of gravel can easily hit the windshield while the vehicle is moving. Accidents may certainly cause the auto glass to get damaged entirely. Extreme below freezing weather conditions are also occasionally the cause. Often times, car windshields from turning into casualties of acts of vandalism or reckless driving of other folks. The point is that the auto glass of autos are made of tempered glass, glass, but it is nevertheless susceptible to damages.

Sometimes, repair is good enough but if the break done is very significant, then, basic repair service is really out of question. In this type of scenarios, windshield replacement will be the most recommended choice. people will concede it or not, auto glass replacement is really essential if there is a split which is lesser than three inches. At times, these kinds of splits start as little as the tip of a pin that could be created by mechanical stress, temperature deviation and rocks. But despite the causes behind the scratch or fracture, it is simply crucial to act on windshield replacements prior to it will be far too late. As pointed out previously, auto glass exist to shield you from any type of item traveling through the air. As a result, waiting for too much time to replace faulty auto glass could in fact come to be a frustrating aspect of the vehicle.

Winooski History

5000 years ago! That is when archaeological research reveals that a single family band came to what is now the City of Winooski.
Harvesting the ample butternuts that grew here, the family soon moved on, but their prehistoric campground has become one of Vermont’s most significant archaeological sites. Other native people came to Winooski in the years that followed.

Time too has moved on. But Winooski has continued to play an important role in Vermont’s history and development. In the early 1770’s Ira Allen “led a people through a wilderness of 70 miles” to construct a formidable blockhouse on the Winooski (then “Onion”) River which served both as a fort and as general store and office for the land-speculating Onion River Company. “Fort Frederick” was never used for defense, but its protective presence increased value of Onion River property and advanced local settlement.

After the Revolutionary War, Ira Allen returned to build a dam across the Winooski River with sawmills at each end. The use of the Winooski falls to generate energy had begun; it would continue into the 20th Century with the construction of water-powered mills on both sides of the river. Ira himself built a house on the present site of the Winooski Block around 1785 and enjoyed a garden which was described as “a paradise of fruits and flowers.”

The Winooski mills’ fortunes mirrored the highs and lows of American economic life and labor and eventually led to Winooski’s becoming a separate City on March 7, 1922. When the mills closed in 1954, Winooski was devastated, but the federally-funded Model Cities program, Community Development Block Grants, Urban Development Action Grants, and other public and private investment and effort enabled the City to experience a “Renaissance” in the 1980’s with the rehabilitation of deserted mill buildings and the revitalization of the City’s downtown. Two examples follow:

The Woolen Mill, a generally vacant and under-utilized former textile mill, located in the National Historical Mill District, was transformed into a vibrant combination of living and working space, including 163 apartments, and 20,000 square feet of office space. Overlooking the natural beauty of the falls on the Winooski River, and a dominant architectural feature in the downtown, this building was a key element of the downtown revitalization effort.

The Champlain Mill, also located in the heart of the district along the Winooski River, stood under-utilized for over twenty years as it passed through a series of multipurpose industrial uses. In 1981, the Champlain Mill was renovated into three floors of retail commercial space and two floors of office space. In the Champlain Mill’s 175,000 square feet, stores, restaurants and several offices have been established.

Obviously, a great deal has changed since people came to pick butternuts here 5,000 years ago!

More Information About Winooski

The name comes from the Abenaki for “wild onions”, plentiful along the river. The earliest European documentation offering a written approximation of the native word are French-made maps, which identify the river as “Ouinousqui”.

In the southeast corner of Colchester was a fine natural falls in the Winooski (then Onion or French) River (more River info here) where Ira Allen, one of the grantees of Colchester, built grain and lumber mills in about 1772. To protect their interests from marauding French and Indians, he and his cousin Remember Baker built a two-story palisaded enclosure which they called Fort Frederick. Good land nearby attracted settlers, and the community which grew up around the mills and the fort became known as Allen’s Settlement, later as Winooski Falls, then simply Winooski when it was incorporated as a civil entity separate from Colchester.

The large number of French Canadians who came to work in the textile mills in later years resulted in a portion of the city being referred to as French Village.

In the late Seventies, it was suggested that Winooski be covered with a dome as a means of saving energy, snow removal and other municpal costs. The suggestion was especially interesting to Community Development Director Mark Tigan, who vigorously investigated the possibility, making national (and apparently, worldwide) news in the process. More than one aaplication to the US Department of Energy, asking for funds to study the idea, were turned down, and the enthusiam went away. But that’s not the end of it…

In July of 2008, Virtual Vermont Internet Magazine received an inquiry from Chen Bai of Shanghai, asking for information on Winooski’s “giant umbrella.” Seems that Bai’s daughter’s 6th grade textbook contains a writeup about a clear plastic umbrella covering the city (supported by an 11-story central tube) which can be opened and closed at will. The story is apparently quite popular in mainland China. Bai sent pictures of the textbook cover and the article itself, along with a translation (all available here). The texbook even contains an artist’s concept of what Winooski looks like, complete with hot air balloons, under its umbrella (there’s no resemblance that we can discern). We provided Bai with the real story. See this article from the Burlington Free Press.

Mobile Auto Glass Replacement

Understanding The Concept Of  Mobile Auto Glass Replacement Services

When it comes to vehicle servicing, more often than not it is done at
the auto shop. The same case applies to glass and mirror replacement and repair
services. It doesn’t matter whether it is something as simple as realigning a
viewing mirror or more intense like full replacement of a windshield mirror.
However, recently mobile auto glass replacement services have taken the
industry by storm. These combine convenience and efficiency making life a lot
easier for the client and business a lot better for the professional. Below is
all you need to know about this revolutionary trend in terms of what it is, how

What  Are Mobile Auto Glass Services

Mobile auto glass services are, as the name suggests, services offered
by auto glass shops away from the main base of operation. Usually, this is done
in satellite locations by trained crew members from the main office. The
greatest beneficiaries of these services are car owners who find themselves in
dire need of immediate glass and window repair services where convenience is
important. This may be done anywhere including in residential garages,
commercial parking lots and even on road sides.

For businesses that offer this very handy service, there are specific
ways to go about requesting for their mobile services. More often than not, all
you as the client need to do is to get in contact with the business, explain
your problem and location and wait for help to arrive. After this
over-the-phone consultation, an appointment date is set and communicated to you
to plan accordingly.

With such visits especially in the residential setting, security is
everything. No one wants to let a complete stranger into their home to fix
their car. However, most companies tackle this challenge by sending a
comprehensive review of their agent including a picture and contact details.
That way, you know exactly who to expect. More about windshield replacement.

Benefits Of These Services

1.  They are convenient in terms of time and effort
on the client’s part.

2.  They are just as reliable if not more than
repairs done on site.

3.  There is usually very friendly treatment from
both agents sent to your rescue and the administrators coordinated everything
that is on the field.

Auto Glass Replacement

Don’t go for auto glass replacement without reading this!

Getting your car windows replaced or repaired is not a particularly fun experience. Whether you have a chip or a crack in your windshield or your window is smashed to smithereens, getting it fixed is a priority. So, you do what anyone in your situation will do- you search for the best auto glass replacement service in your area. You get estimates from a couple and pick the one that offers you the best price. But there is so much more to know when it comes to car window replacement and repair that can save you time, money and most importantly frustration of not getting it right.

Now, the most important thing to remember is the fact that glass replacement shops and not regulated by any regulatory agency. So, no one checks on these shops whether they follow all the safety precautions and have all the certifications and licenses. Thus, it is incumbent on you to check all these things out before you take your car to the shop for window replacement.

Auto Glass Replacement

The windshield is a vital component of your car, and it supports as much as70% weight of your car’s roof! So, if it caves, the roof is going to come crashing down on your head. The point is, you want the windshields of your car replaced correctly and by a professional who knows what he/she is doing. So, before you go ahead and drop your car off at the cheapest car window replacement shop, here are five most important things to keep in mind.

  1. The cheapest option may not be the best

All of us wants to save some money on car repairs, right? So, if you see a deal, you want to grab it with both hands, and there is nothing wrong with that. But don’t pick a car window replacement service just because it is costs less. Make sure that you are dealing with pros and not amateurs who neither have the know-how nor the experience. You may end up spending a bit more with professionals, but you will get a far superior job done, and it is worth the extra few dollars.

  1. Pay attention to what glass the technician uses

When it comes to car glasses and windshields, there are three options available- OE (original equipment), OEE (Original Equipment Equivalent) and generic glass. You most certainly want to avoid the generic kind. If you go to a good shop who know what they are doing, they will explain you the difference between generic, OE and OEE glass panel. The generic may be a bit cheaper, but on a long run, you are better off using OE or OEE glass.

  1. Talk to your technician about the repair process

The first thing you want to do is to make sure that the shop is AGRSS certified. If they are selling you OE or OEE glass, they most probably are, just double check. It is also crucial that you talk to the technician about the repair process. Questions like what kind of urethane they are using, or what is the safe drive-away time for that urethane, are all legitimate questions. Make sure that the adhesives that the shop uses are Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard compliant.

  1. Don’t forget to ask about warranty

Most auto glass replacement shops will give you some warranty on both parts and the labor. Also, make sure you are familiar with the terms of the warranty. Some damages may be under warranty, while others might not. Also, make sure you know what to do if you see any issues with the job. For more information: auto glass repair.
